Zhao Gao, a Qin dynasty court eunuch who wielded absolute power under a puppet emperor, tested the loyalty of court officials by presenting a deer and calling it a horse. The emperor objected, saying it was a deer.

Zhao Gao then went to each official and asked whether it was a deer or a horse.

Those who called it a horse lived to see another day. Those who spoke the truth did not. But a few who survived eventually saw to Zhao Gao’s own demise as the dynasty crumbled.

Zhao Gao is the market. You are the lowly court official.

And I find that in this game, survival is a greater virtue than “being right”… at least until the moment is right.
